Mr Bump

Well I survived my first day back at work! Hooray! Originally I had assumed that my first day back would be similar to the first day at a new job, but it was actually much easier. It was nice already knowing all of my co-workers, knowing my boss, knowing where everything was kept and who to ask if I had a question. And it was nice to see everyone again and to get back to work!

Today was much, much harder.

The novelty of the first day had worn off, and I found myself missing – really missing – Baby Lovely. That surprised me, as I had assumed that the first day apart from her would be much harder than the second.

As soon as I sat down at my new work space today, I set out the Mr Men/Little Miss figurines I had had out on my monitor before I left. For those of you who aren’t acquainted with them, they’re from a series of children’s books by Roger Hargreaves from the 1970s and 1980s. The pictures below also circulated Facebook awhile back (a friend might have tagged you as one of the characters):

Before I left work in February, I had frequently thought of myself as the “Mr Bump” character…I always aimed to be Mr Happy or Little Miss Sunshine, of course, but with my ever-increasing stomach, Mr Bump seemed more applicable. Especially because he was always bumping into things, which you tend to do when you’re shaped like Humpty Dumpty.

Yesterday, as I walked to the bathroom at work (it’s pretty far from my office so I have a lot of time to think), I had to chuckle at how glad I was to not be pregnant anymore. My feet didn’t hurt, I wasn’t waddling, I didn’t have the urgent need to regurgitate, and I didn’t have to smile and nod at any comments about how big I was getting. No more Mr Bump.

But today…I’m thinking it would be nice to be Mr Bump again. Then at least Baby Lovely would be here. With me. Even if it would only be as a tickle in my tummy while eating my 10am apple. That sure would be nice.

I guess I will have to satisfy myself with a video of her for now. Thank goodness for smart phones.

Tomorrow I will be Mr Happy. Or maybe even Little Miss Giggles. I could even live with Mr Bounce or Little Miss Scatterbrain.

But today, I will allow myself to be Mr Sad.
